Band Programs

West Forsyth High School offers students three concert band classes and one beginning band class. The bands are divided by difficulty of music performed. West also offers two Jazz Bands, Jazz I and Jazz Combo. The Marching Titans are a competitive marching band comprised of talented musicians who bring heart and soul to Friday Night Lights in addition to competing at various events across the state.

Beginning Band

Beginning Band is a class for students that are starting in band for the first time or that have taken time off from band and would like to get back into band. This band does not perform at concerts.

Concert Band

The Concert Band is open to all students, regardless of age or audition and performs a wide range of music.

Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is a mixture of more advanced younger students and older students and performs moderate to advanced band literature.

Wind Ensemble

The Wind Ensemble is the premier, audition-only concert ensemble offered at West Forsyth High School and regularly performs literature in the hardest music difficulty ranking. Students in Wind Ensemble are expected to audition for honor bands and other extracurricular musical events.

Jazz Combo

Jazz Combo is an introduction to performing jazz and improvisation and is recommended for students that have not been in a jazz band before.

Jazz I

Jazz I is an advanced Jazz Band that performs high level literature and placement in this ensemble is by audition only. Students enrolled in Jazz I are required to audition for Western Region Jazz and participate in Jazz Festivals

Marching Titans

The Marching Band provides a “society” and “family” to which all band students can belong. It is a place where they not only learn values and standards but also learn to depend on one another in their pursuit of excellence. Students learn about responsibility, doing their fair share, and sticking to a common goal. They learn to value people, respect their peers, and not make judgments on the superficial. They frequently acquire a stronger base for their adult life than any other avenue open to them when they participate in this ensemble.

Band Awards & Recognition

During the 2024 marching band season, the Marching Titans had great success winning several 1st place awards in most categories at each competition. They were awarded Grand Champion at two competitions this season, which were the only two events attended that offered that award.

Other notable achievements include (2023/2024 stats):

  • 15 students in the NCBMA All District Band

  • 13 students in the Western Region Jazz Band

  • 2 students in the All State Jazz Band

  • 2 students in the All State Concert Band

In 2023/24, at NC State Music Performance Assessments, The Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Jazz I have all earned straight superior ratings, which is the highest ratings the state can give a band program.

So far for 2024/25, we have placed over 30 students into the WSFCS All County Bands. Stay tuned for how we finish the 2024/25 school year, and congrats to Mr. Shoemaker and the bands for their continued success!
